Weekend Road Trip: Johnson City
As you explore points West, there are many places you’ll want to discover. One not to be overlooked is Johnson City. This town, just a 50 mile trek from Austin, has the nostalgia of a charming town square, and the fun, active atmosphere of a burgeoning new destination. With shops and galleries, wine tasting rooms and bucket list BBQ, Johnson City offers Austinites a little of the familiar, and a lot of new experiences.
>> Bucket List BBQ
Ronnie's Ice House BBQ • 211 US 21 • Johnson City, Texas
It may have been featured on the Food Network, but Ronnie’s still maintains the covetable status of local secret among Texans. Lines form early, and sell-outs of their meats happen daily. Smoked out back for up to 14 hours, Ronnie’s gives hungry visitors and BBQ enthusiasts a meal to remember. Only open for Lunch. Get there by 2, or you might face a sell-out. Tues-Sat, 10 am - 3 pm
>> Craft Beer + Pub Games
Pecan Street Brewing Company • 106 E Pecan Drive • Johnson City, TX
With more than thirty brews to their name and seven on tap at any given time, Pecan Street Brewery is the place to relax with a pint (or a flight) and take advantage of their awesome menu (fried portabellos with chipotle ranch, anyone?) Play a round of shuffleboard or pool, and catch one of their live music shows on most Sunday nights. Tues-Thurs, Sun 11-9, Fri-Sat 11-10
>> What Happened Here in a Previous Life
Johnson Family Settlement • Ladybird Lane and Avenue G • Johnson City, TX
At first glance, you might drive by - it’s such a quiet, serene - even mild - experience. But if you give yourself the opportunity to stand where President Lyndon Johnson’s ancestors worked, struggled, endured, and carved out a life in what was then wilderness, yougive yourself the chance to experience your own life more fully. Historic barns, Johnson’s boyhood home, and more are open for tours and visiting. Textures abound, so bring your macro lens. Operated by the National Park Service. Open every day, 9 AM - 5 PM
>> Dining in Historic Digs
East Main Grill • 209 E. Main St • Johnson City, TX
Johnson City’s newest restaurant joins the quaint, creative shops at The Old Lumber Yard. While you could savor just about any of East Main Grill’s delicious entrées and sandwiches, we recommend the chicken-fried steak - and so does everyone else. Serving Lunch Mon-Sat 11-3, Dinner Mon, Fri and Sat 5-9. Brunch on Fri and Sat beginning at 10. Closed Tuesdays.
Another road, another adventure in your back pocket. Keep riding, keep exploring. As you’ve
seen, a few miles from home can be a world apart. •
